Food Safety Manager | RFoodSM

Registered Food Safety Manager (RFoodSM) is the second level of the Register of Food Safety Professionals.

Food Safety Managers are typically responsible for the implementation and operation of company policy, systems and guidance. They will provide technical advice about internal food safety policy and the development and improvement of said policy. They may conduct 3rd party audits or investigations. They will exercise a large degree of autonomy in their work and will likely manage small teams to achieve outcomes.

Eligibility

Our assessment process is based on demonstrating competencies but, to give you an indication, below are just a few of the example routes that could lead to someone being eligible for Manager status. Please note that qualifications are not a requirement (except for HACCP*) and applications can be assessed solely based on experience:

  • 10 years’ experience in the food sector with at least 2 years in a food safety-related management position
  • BSc in Food Science and Technology or closely related subject plus 6 years’ experience in the food sector with at least 2 years in a food safety-related management position 
  • Masters in Food Science and Technology or closely related subject plus 4 years’ experience in the food sector with at least 1 year in a food safety-related management position
  • PhD in Food Science and Technology or closely related subject plus 2 years’ experience at a senior level related to food safety 

All Food Safety Managers are expected to have at least a Level 3 (Intermediate) HAACP Qualification or equivalent

Cost:

There is a £39 registration fee. The annual renewal fee is £39.

How to apply:

Before you begin an application for RFoodSM you must have at least Associate membership of IFST.  You can apply online by logging in to your IFST account. Please ensure you have read the guidance document (below) before submitting your application. 

Ongoing registration:

In order to maintain your RFoodSM status, you will need to pay a renewal fee, and are required to annually confirm that you remain professionally active, competent to perform your role, and have engaged in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Every three years you will be required to submit a summary report of your CPD activities during the previous year, and 35 hours of CPD are required to meet the renewal target.
