Celebrating Black History Month: Honouring Black Food Scientists and Technologists
As we celebrate Black History Month, the Institute of Food Science and Technology would like to take this opportunity to highlight the remarkable yet often overlooked contributions of Black food scientists and technologists. Their work has helped shape the food systems we rely on today, advancing food science, technology, safety, and innovation.
Throughout history, Black scientists have been integral to the development of agricultural methods, food preservation techniques, and food safety protocols that are crucial in feeding populations and ensuring food safety and quality. From George Washington Carver’s groundbreaking work with crop rotation and sustainable agriculture to the modern innovations of scientists working in food microbiology, biotechnology, and product development, the legacy of Black professionals in this field is deep and transformative.
However, these contributions have not been given the visibility and recognition they deserve. The contributions of individuals to progressing the food system are often overlooked, especially those from marginalised backgrounds, hence the importance of recognising the expertise, ingenuity, and resilience of Black scientists and technologists who have helped push the boundaries of food science and technology.
Celebrating Black History Month is not just about looking back, but also looking forward. As we recognise past achievements, we must also commit to fostering greater diversity and inclusion in food science and technology. This year’s Black History Month theme is “Reclaiming Narratives,” which BHM UK says marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture. We encourage you to visit www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk to learn more about how Black History Month 2024 will be celebrated across the UK.
Ensuring that Black professionals have the support, opportunities, and visibility they need to thrive is not a performative gesture, but a necessary step in advancing the field for all. In previous years, we've been fortunate to interview IFST members from the Black community as part of our celebrations of Black History Month. We have compiled these interviews as well as a collection of biographies and celebrations of the contributions of prominent historical figures from the Black community who have made exceptional contributions to food science and technology.
At the Institute of Food Science and Technology, we honour the Black scientists and technologists—past, present, and future—whose work continues to make a profound impact on how we grow, process, and consume food. Let’s use this month as a reminder to actively uplift and amplify the voices and contributions of Black professionals within the food science community, not just in October, but all year round.
