On 28 September 2017, The European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) voted down on the objection to the European Commission’s proposed criteria to regulate the levels of acrylamide.
In July 2017, the European Commission published a draft regulation requiring food business operators (FBOs) to apply mandatory measures to reduce the presence of acrylamide, proportionate to the size and nature of their establishment.
Although the draft regulation was welcomed by both the food industry and consumer organisations, it was questioned by some MEPs as an example of bureaucratic interference where it was not needed.
The ENVI committee threw out the objection by 44 votes to ten, with seven abstentions.
