Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a family of chronic neurodegenerative diseases which are a human health concern and pose a threat to agricultural and natural resources. They are characterised by degeneration of brain and spinal tissue which include such diseases as Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and scrapie in sheep and goats.
