Food Standards Scotland has just launched a new food safety marketing campaign aimed at encouraging good food safety practices in the home.
The campaign highlights 20 common ‘kitchen crimes’ which could potentially lead to food poisoning.
According to the recent survey carried by FSS, people in Scotland only follow 11 out of 20 food safety practices on average.
FSS has identified the following as some common behaviours:
- Using the ‘sniff test’ for example to check if ham is still safe to eat
- Not checking the fridge is at the right temperature
- Washing chicken
There are estimated to be around 43,000 estimated cases of foodborne illness in Scotland annually. Yet 56% of people are not concerned with food hygiene at home.
