Lucy Foster was awarded Volunteer of the Week for her continued and recent support for IFST by perfoming 'dragon duties' at Ecotrophelia.

Why did you join IFST?

I joined as a student a long time ago! – I  think it’s a really good way to keep up to date with whats going on in food science and to network

Congratulations on being awarded Volunteer of the Week!  What does it mean to receive this award?

I am really thrilled to win this award – a big surprise!

Tell us more about your duties as a ‘Dragon’ at the recent UK Ecotrophelia heats

I was one of the judges of the competition and our role was to evaluate the entries from a technical, commercial and innovation perspective  - it was very enjoyable and also challenging as all the entries were of a very high standard – well done to all concerned!

What’s your biggest professional achievement?

Hard to say as I have worked on lots of things – all food related!  My contributions to the governments work on food safety, food authenticity (including horse meat!) and food security are probably highlights.

How did you get to where you are today?

By enjoying what I do – I love being a food scientist!

What advice would you give to people starting out in their careers?

Be open minded about what you want to do and don’t stop learning

Why is it important to belong to a member organisation like IFST?

It provides an opportunity to maintain your specialism and keep in the loop about what’s happening in food science and technology

Tell us something about yourself that few people know

I love everything French!
