Thank you for taking an interest in becoming a preliminary judge for UK Ecotrophelia.
The background
This is a European-wide competition with involvement of 18 countries. The Final is held at a big food expo in the Autumn, most recently SIAL 2019, Paris. Campden BRI in partnership with IFST hosts the UK heats in June. The competition is all about coming up with the next 'eco-innovative' food or drink product. Students from higher education institutions are asked to come up with a suitable product and design everything themselves from concept to shelf.
What's expected of a preliminary judge?
As a preliminary judge you will be asked to assess each team's application. The deadline for submissions is the 31 March 2020 and the shortlisted teams will be announced on 22 April. As a judge it is important that you have availability and the time commitment between these dates to read through and assess multiple applications.
Each team will submit an explanatory dossier which are limited to 20 A4 pages and should include the following:
- a description of the food product: exact name, precise category (for example: savoury starters, desserts, ready-made meals, alcoholic drinks etc.…), general description, composition, the product's taste and nutritional qualities, technical specifications, manufacturing process, packaging, shelf life;
- description of the product's innovation and eco-innovative aspects;
- a summary of the marketing, sales and business plan;
- a description of the communications strategy specifying why consumers will desire/accept the product innovation, key messages, and media channels for consumers and/or buyers/distributors
applicants will also be submitting a 3 minute video showcasing their presentation skills, however this will not be formally assessed.
What do you get in return?
Preliminary judges will be invited to the UK heats which are held at Campden BRI between 2-3 June and you will get a chance to sample each team's product and see them present their ideas live on stage. Although not on the Dragon's Den voting panel on the day, you still will play a pivotal role in the Ecotrophelia process.
